Alopecia Therapeutic Support Group

The Alopecia Therapeutic Support Group is a 5-week program designed to provide psychological support for those living with alopecia.

Alopecia can have a profound impact on an individual’s psychological wellbeing. In a society that places great importance on physical appearance, hair loss is distressing. With the complexities that come along with hair loss, individuals can feel alone, isolated and vulnerable. CMT Psychology uses an online group program to deliver support in a safe, accessible and warm environment.

What topics are covered?

The 5-week program explores:

  • The psychological impact of living with alopecia

  • The grieving process associated with hair loss

  • Identifying unhelpful thoughts and behaviours that are getting in the way of what’s important

  • Mindfulness and thought defusion skills

  • Clarifying what matters

  • Setting goals based on what matters

How is a therapeutic support group different from other support groups?

Support groups are a great way to share your experience and connect with others who are going through a similar situation. In addition to providing the opportunity to connect with others, the Alopecia Therapeutic Support Group at CMT Psychology will teach you skills to manage the challenges that come with alopecia. The program draws upon Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to support you through your alopecia journey and is facilitated by a registered psychologist.

Should I attend a group or individual therapy?

The Alopecia Therapeutic Support Group can be used as a standalone treatment or as a complement to individual therapy. By learning skills in a group setting you can free-up valuable time in your individual sessions to explore more personal issues. A group can also be a great way to access support while waiting for individual therapy as many psychologists currently have long waitlists. Deciding the best way to access support is a very personal choice which we are happy to discuss with you.

What is included in the program and how is the material delivered?

The Alopecia Therapeutic Support Group is delivered online. The program includes:

  • an individual initial assessment (30 minutes)

  • 5 weekly pre-recorded webinars to watch at a time that is convenient for you

  • 5 live support groups facilitated by a psychologist. This will give you the opportunity to practice the skills discussed in the webinar and share your experience with other participants.

  • An individual check-in at the conclusion of the program (15 minutes)

There will be no fee if you choose not to proceed with the group after the initial assessment.
